Best things to do in Watamu

Snorkel and dive in Watamu Marine National Park

The Marine Park protects coral gardens, reef fish, turtles and rays just off the beach. Glass-bottom boat trips and snorkelling trips leave every day around low tide, and certified divers can explore deeper reefs and walls. Local dive centres on WatamuPulse:

Sail Mida Creek at sunset

Mida Creek is a wide tidal creek lined with mangroves, famous for birdwatching and for sunset trips on a traditional dhow. Walk the mangrove boardwalk, watch the waders at low tide, and ask about the conservation work of A Rocha Kenya, which runs environmental education and mangrove activities.

Meet the sea turtles

Local Ocean Conservation protects sea turtles and their nesting beaches in Watamu. Visiting is a great way for families to learn about the turtles that make Watamu special.

Explore Gede Ruins and Arabuko-Sokoke Forest

Just inland from Watamu, the Gede Ruins are the remains of a Swahili town in the forest, with mosques, houses and a palace. Next door, Arabuko-Sokoke Forest is the largest remaining coastal forest in East Africa, home to rare birds, butterflies and forest elephants. Go early in the morning with a local guide.

Go on safari

Watamu is a good base for safaris: day trips and overnight trips to Tsavo East, plus coastal excursions such as the Marafa Depression ("Hell's Kitchen"). Safari companies on WatamuPulse include Limoma Safari, Safari Kenya Ebano, Zanne and Kelly tours.

Kitesurf and water sports

The steady trade winds make Watamu a popular kitesurfing spot for much of the year. Resorts and water-sport centres along the beach rent equipment and give lessons.

Relax on the beaches

The beaches between Watamu village, Turtle Bay, Blue Lagoon, Garoda and Jacaranda are wide and white, with rock islands that you can walk to at low tide. Always check the tide times before walking out.

Book a tour: boat trips, snorkelling, Mida Creek, safaris and cultural tours are on WatamuPulse Tours. Pay a 30% deposit with M-Pesa, and the rest to the operator on the day.
